How It Works

Why We're the Gold Standard in Food Rating for Families

Our independent Real Food Ratings cut through the hype. With expert reviews rooted in nutrition science and a wholefood lens, you'll finally know what's really in your family's food — and which products genuinely support your health.

EVIDENCE-INFORMED

We draw from peer-reviewed science, but we don’t stop there. Our approach prioritises studies that raise valid concerns – especially where children’s health is at stake. While some additives may be labelled “safe in small amounts” or only harmful in large doses or animal studies, we take a precautionary stance and focus on the potential cumulative effects of regular consumption in young diets.

Our system is grounded in:

Why it matters: The growing research linking food quality to physical health, cognitive development, and even mood regulation affects everyone—not just children. Our evidence-based approach helps you avoid potential risks before they become obvious, protecting your family’s immediate and long-term wellbeing.

BEYOND THE LABEL

Most nutrition panels only tell part of the story – calories, fat, sugar, and protein. But real nourishment goes deeper. That’s why we evaluate the whole product, not just the numbers.

Our assessment looks beyond the panel to uncover:

Why it matters: Just because a product looks healthy on the label doesn’t mean it is. We go beyond the marketing and scrutinise what truly supports your child’s health.

BUILT FOR PARENTS, BY A PARENT WHO KNOWS BETTER

The Real Food Rating wasn’t created by industry or driven by profit. It was developed by a leading paediatric nutritionist and parent who grew tired of the confusion, conflicting messages, and marketing tricks aimed at families.

This is the system parents have been asking for:

Why it matters: You deserve a rating system that puts your child’s health first — with no compromise.

WHY WE'RE DIFFERENT

Unlike traditional rating systems, we don't wait for "proof beyond doubt" to act. If an ingredient shows concerning evidence in credible studies, especially in relation to children's health, we rate accordingly. Your child's wellbeing is too important to gamble on.
Additive Safety Profiles

We take a precautionary approach, prioritising peer-reviewed studies that highlight potential health risks, particularly for children. If there's credible evidence of harm, we flag it!

Processing Impact

Ultra-processed foods are linked to serious health concerns including obesity, gut disruption, and developmental issues. We measure how manufacturing methods strip away nutritional integrity, creating products that feed but don't nourish. The less processed, the higher the rating.

Nutritional Integrity

Not all calories are equal. We look at whether a product truly nourishes your family or just fills them up. Our system checks for excessive added sugar, salt, unhealthy fats, low fibre, and poor-quality protein—factors that affect energy, mood, and growth. We also consider where these nutrients come from, so you're not misled by "health halos" or tricky packaging.

Additive Safety Assessment
(30% of Rating)

What Sets Us Apart: We don't just count total sugar—we evaluate the types of sugar and their context within the food, recognizing that all sugars are not equal in children's diets.

Our unique sugar analysis includes:
  • Artificial Colors

Particularly those linked to hyperactivity and attention issues in susceptible children (Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6)

  • Preservatives

Identifying concerning options like BHA, BHT, and sulfites that may trigger sensitivities

  • Flavor Enhancers

Flagging MSG derivatives and artificial sweeteners that can affect neurological development

  • Emulsifiers

Assessing those that may impact gut health, which is increasingly linked to behavioral outcomes in children

  • Processing Aids

Identifying residual chemicals that don't legally require listing on labels but may affect sensitive individuals

Real-World Impact: Parents of children with ADHD, autism spectrum disorders, and sensory processing issues report significant behavioral improvements when avoiding certain additives flagged by our system.

Processing Level Evaluation
(25% of Rating)

What Sets Us Apart: Unlike systems that treat all foods in a category the same, we assess the degree of processing—which directly impacts how children's bodies utilize the food.

Our processing scale examines:
  • Mechanical Processing

How much the physical structure of food has been altered (minimally impacting rating)

  • Heat Treatment

Assessing whether beneficial enzymes and nutrients remain intact

  • Refinement Level

Measuring how much fiber and nutrients have been stripped away

  • Reconstitution Methods

Evaluating foods reconstructed from isolated components

  • Ultra-Processing Markers

Identifying hallmarks of highly processed foods specifically linked to childhood obesity and metabolic issues

Real-World Impact: Children consuming foods with lower processing scores typically experience more stable energy levels and improved digestion—critical for classroom performance and daily well-being.

Sugar Analysis
(20% of Rating)

What Sets Us Apart: Unlike systems that treat all foods in a category the same, we assess the degree of processing—which directly impacts how children's bodies utilize the food.

Our processing scale examines:
  • Natural vs. Added Sugar Ratio

Distinguishing between naturally occurring sugars (like those in fruit) and added sugars

  • Sugar Form Assessment

Evaluating whole food sugars (like fruit) vs. refined sweeteners vs. artificial alternatives

  • Glycemic Impact

Considering how quickly the sugar affects blood glucose levels, which impacts children's energy and focus

  • "Hidden" Sugar Identification

Flagging the 60+ different names for sugar that confuse parents

  • Sugar-to-Fiber Ratio

Analyzing whether sufficient fiber is present to help moderate sugar absorption

  • Context Consideration

Treating sugar differently in occasional treats versus daily staples

Real-World Impact: Parents report children experience fewer energy crashes, improved
concentration, and better oral health when using our sugar analysis to guide choices.

Ingredient Integrity Assessment
(15% of Rating)

What Sets Us Apart: We evaluate the quality and sourcing of ingredients, not just their presence or absence.

Our system examines:
  • Whole vs. Fractionated Ingredients

Prioritizing ingredients used in their complete form

  • Organic Status

Giving preference to organic ingredients for foods where pesticide residue is a concern for developing bodies

  • Oil Quality

Evaluating types of oils and their processing methods, which impact inflammation and brain development

  • "Clean Label" Verification

Ensuring "natural" claims are substantiated by actual ingredient quality

  • Fortification Assessment

Distinguishing between naturally occurring nutrients and synthetic additions

Real-World Impact: Children’s bodies are uniquely vulnerable to certain environmental contaminants and benefit from more nutritionally complete ingredient forms.

Nutritional Balance
(10% of Rating)

What Sets Us Apart: Rather than treating all calories equally, we assess the nutritional composition in context of children's specific developmental needs.

Our nutritional analysis considers:
  • Macronutrient Balance

Evaluating whether the food provides sustained energy for growing bodies

  • Micronutrient Density

Assessing vitamins and minerals critical for brain development and immune function

  • Beneficial Compounds

Identifying presence of phytonutrients and other beneficial compounds

  • Anti-Nutrient Factors

Flagging components that may interfere with nutrient absorption

  • Age-Appropriate Nutrition

Considering whether nutrient levels are suitable for different developmental stages

Real-World Impact: Children’s bodies are uniquely vulnerable to certain environmental contaminants and benefit from more nutritionally complete ingredient forms.

What We Need:
How is this different from the Health Star Rating?

Unlike government systems focused primarily on macronutrients, the Real Food Rating evaluates ingredients, processing methods, additive safety, and whole food integrity. This provides a more comprehensive assessment of a product's impact on children's health and development.

Do you rate all products?

Our database is continuously expanding. The app will initially feature thousands of commonly purchased products, with new additions weekly. We prioritize products popular among families with children.

What if I disagree with a rating?

We welcome feedback! Submit your thoughts through our website, and our evaluation team will review. Our ratings are based on current scientific evidence, but we're always open to considering new information or perspectives.

Do you work with food companies?

Yes, but our ratings remain independent. We offer certification and consulting services to help companies improve their products, but our rating criteria never change. This maintains the integrity and trustworthiness of our system for parents.
