MANDY'S TAKE
KOJA is genuinely raising the bar — and largely succeeding. With just 10.9g of sugar per 100g, it contains nearly 50% less sugar than most commercial snack bars, all without relying on a long list of ultra-processed ingredients or additives. There’s a lot to love: a short, transparent ingredient list, no vegetable oils, and real food inclusions like pumpkin seeds (nut-free and school-friendly), chia seeds, coconut, and oats.
It’s not perfect — the brown rice syrup could be improved with a wholefood alternative like pure maple syrup — but overall, this is a great example of a packaged snack that’s genuinely trying to get it right. Unfortunately, it’s also a clear example of where the Health Star Rating system fails, awarding more stars to ultra-processed bars while underrating products like KOJA that prioritise real food.”

THE VERDICT
KOJA has genuinely innovated in a category flooded with sugar. With a third of the sugar and triple the fibre of many leading snack bars, this is one I can confidently recommend. It’s proof that food manufacturers can do better when they choose to. KOJA earns a 4/5 Real Food Rating (RFR), even though it receives a lower Health Star Rating — a clear sign that the current system doesn’t reward real food choices.
