MANDY'S TAKE
“This wrap is a textbook case of health-washing. With claims like ‘source of fibre’, ‘source of protein’, and ‘no artificial colours or flavours’ splashed across the front, it positions itself as a wholesome choice. But turn the pack over, and the ingredient list tells a very different story. It contains eight food additives, including mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids (471), linked to heart disease and possible cancer risk, and carboxymethylcellulose (466), a synthetic thickener recently shown in human studies to disrupt the gut microbiome. It also includes calcium propionate (282), a preservative associated with hyperactivity in children, and sorbic acid (200), which may trigger adverse reactions in sensitive individuals. Despite the seeds and modest fibre boost, the first ingredient is refined wheat flour; not wholemeal as the branding implies. Real food wraps don’t need a long list of additives; in fact, you can make one at home with just a handful of ingredients. This highly processed option is awarded a 1/5 Real Food Rating (RFR) and is best avoided, especially for growing children or anyone looking to support their gut and overall health.”

BETTER OPTIONS
- Choose wraps with 5 ingredients or fewer. Look for options made from wholemeal or sprouted flour, water, olive oil, and salt. The shorter the list, the better for your gut.
- Skip the shelf-stable supermarket wraps and try fresh sourdough flatbreads or traditional Lebanese bread from your local bakery, often made without preservatives or emulsifiers.
- Use nourishing wholefood alternatives like large lettuce leaves, nori sheets, or steamed collard greens as natural wrap options. Perfect for lunchboxes or quick dinners.

THE VERDICT
The original MILO Bar is built on ultra-processed sugars, refined oils, fillers, and additives like sorbitol and flavouring with only a small amount of actual wholegrain. Despite its 4-star Health Star Rating, it offers little in terms of real nutrition. This is a heavily engineered, confectionery-style bar that shouldn’t be marketed as a healthy option — especially for children. There’s nothing here that justifies its health halo. It receives a 1/5 Real Food Rating (RFR) and falls into the Avoid category.
