MANDY'S TAKE
“This is a classic example of an ultra-processed wrap marketed for convenience, but built mainly from refined wheat flour and palm oil-based vegetable shortening. While the fibre and sugar may look “okay” on a nutrition label, the heavy industrial processing, use of emulsifier 471, and a cocktail of artificial additives, including two preservatives, make this a product to avoid if you’re looking for real food quality or supporting gut and metabolic health.“

- 70%+ sugar content

NUTRITION SNAPSHOT
Positives
- Low sugar per serve, in line with most white wraps.
- Contains added oat fibre (likely for texture) for a small fibre boost.
- Moderate protein (based on gluten, not wholefood sources).
Negatives
- Emulsifiers 471 (mono- and diglycerides of fatty acids) and 481 (sodium stearoyl lactylate) are linked to gut, metabolic, and heart health risks, and signal heavy industrial processing.
- Preservatives 281 (sodium propionate) and 200 (sorbic acid) are associated with risks such as hyperactivity, gut disruption, and potential allergic reactions.
- Additives 422 (humectant, glycerol) and 412 (thickener, guar gum) add to the overall chemical load and processing burden.
- Palm oil is used as the main fat source, raising significant concerns for health (as a refined saturated fat) and for sustainability due to deforestation and habitat destruction.
- Refined wheat flour and palm oil dominate the ingredient list, reducing the overall nutritional quality compared to wholemeal or sprouted grains.
- Industrial processing and reliance on additives cannot be redeemed by a minor boost in fibre.
- There are a total of 6 concerning additives used in this wrap, compounding the overall risk and ultra-processed status.

THE VERDICT
The Nutri-Grain branding suggests health, strength, and performance, even resembling a protein bar. But in reality, it’s nearly 40% sugar, low in fibre, and made with seven added sweeteners and ultra-processed ingredients. This is one I would recommend avoiding, and instead treating it in the same way you would a confectionery bar. It receives a generous 1/5 Real Food Rating (RFR).
