The Muesli Bar Truth: What I Found After Rating 25+ Aussie Snack Bars (And Which Ones I’d Actually Give My Kids)

5 min reading time
They’re marketed as healthy. They’re loaded into lunchboxes. And they’re a go-to snack for busy parents. But most supermarket muesli bars are not the nourishing snack you think they are. In fact, some of them are so ultra-processed, they contain up to 9 forms of sugar, synthetic fibres your child’s gut can’t digest, and preservatives that are banned in other countries.

Picture this: You’re rushing to pack school lunches, grab that trusted muesli bar from the pantry, and toss it in. It says “wholegrains” on the front. It’s got 4 health stars. It must be healthy, right?

Wrong.

After analysing over 50 muesli bars on Australian supermarket shelves, I discovered something shocking: Some “healthy” bars contain up to NINE different sugars, synthetic fibres that cause digestive upset, and more ultra-processed ingredients than a packet of lollies.

One popular bar marketed to kids? It’s nearly 40% sugar and has the same amount of sugar per 100g as Oreo cookies.

The Shocking Truth About “Healthy” MueSli BarS

Here’a what I found hiding in Australia’s best-selling muesli bars:

Kellogg’s LCMs: 40.5g sugar per 100g (that’s 40% sugar!) with FOUR different sweeteners

Uncle Tobys “Yoghurt” bars: The yoghurt coating is actually sugar and palm oil with emulsifiers. Yet, it still gets a 4-star Health Star Rating.

Nestlé Milo bars: NINE different forms of sugar, cleverly split to avoid listing sugar first. It also receives a 4-star rating from the government.

Kellogg’s K-Time: Receives a 3 Health Star Rating despite the first ingredient being glucose and the lengthy list of Ultraprocessed ingredients.

Even more concerning? The average muesli bar contains 15-20 ingredients, including:

1. Multiple emulsifiers (linked to gut inflammation)

2. Synthetic fibres (cause bloating and digestive issues)

3. Preservatives like sulphur dioxide (asthma trigger)

4. Industrial seed oils

5. Additives like humectants, stabilisers, modified starch and flavour (artificial and natural)

Marketing TrickS to Watch For

After reviewing dozens of bars, here are the sneaky tactics I see repeatedly:

1. High Health Star Ratings: The Health Star Rating was designed to help parents. Instead, it’s become a tool for food manufacturers to game the system

2. The “Wholegrains” Halo Yes, oats are listed first. But if glucose syrup is second, you’re still eating a sugar bomb.

2. Sugar Stacking Instead of “sugar” being first, they’ll use: glucose syrup + sugar + honey + maltodextrin + golden syrup. Same result, different optics.

3. Fake Fruit Claims “Strawberry” bar with 1% fruit. “Cherry” bar with 1% juice. The “fruit” is often just flavouring.

4. Protein/Fibre Fortification Adding isolated fibres or protein powders to boost nutrition claims while the base remains ultra-processed.

5. Natural = Healthy Myth “Natural flavours” can be highly processed. “No artificial colours” doesn’t mean it’s healthy.

Meanwhile, a wholefood date and nut bar with 5 simple ingredients? Often unrated or scores lower because it doesn’t have “added” nutrients.

Mother Earth Chocolate Chip Oaty Slice – 2 Ticks. High in sugar. Contains sodium metabisulphite (223) preservative.

AVOID (0-1.5 TICKS)

Kellogg’s LCMs – 1 Tick. 40% sugar. Less fibre than Coco Pops. This is confectionary, not food.

Rafferty’s Garden Baby Food Blueberry, Banana and Apple Snack Bars – 1.5 stars. Over 30% sugar. Ultra-processed sugars despite targeting toddlers. Contains canola oil.

What to Look for InStead

The 5-Ingredient Rule: If it has more than 5-6 ingredients, it’s probably ultra-processed.

Real Food First: Look for bars where nuts, seeds, or fruit are the first ingredients.

Sugar Check: Add up ALL the sugars (glucose, syrup, honey, etc.). Aim for under 10g/100g. No added sugar for under 2’s.

Skip the Coatings: “Yoghurt” or “chocolate” coatings are usually sugar and vegetable oil.
